Following the news that Parkfield Community School in Birmingham plans to resume equalities teaching, following several months of consultation with parents, please find the Department's statement below.
A Department for Education spokesperson said:
The Department welcomes the efforts Parkfield and parents have made over recent months to engage in thorough discussions on the teaching of equalities at the school.Parkfield has listened to parents’ views and redesigned its equalities programme as a result.
We trust headteachers to consult with parents – as Parkfield has done – and have been clear that ultimately schools decide what is taught. There is no reason why teaching children about the society that we live in and the different types of loving, healthy relationships that exist cannot be done in a way that respects everyone’s views.
