Today’s Education in the media blog looks at the rise in popularity of degree apprenticeships.
Degree Apprenticeships
Today, Thursday 4 October, the Daily Mail published a piece about degree apprenticeships. The article follows an interview the Education Secretary gave to the paper during his recent fact finding visit to Germany and the Netherlands to find out about their approach to technical education, including apprenticeships.
During the interview he praised schools, colleges and industry for doing a great job to promote the wide range of opportunities out there for young people, including degree apprenticeships. However, he said more needs to done to break down barriers between academic and vocational options including outdated attitudes.
There has been a year on year increase in apprenticeships at Level 6 and 7 and employers are recognising that apprenticeships can have an important place developing the higher level professional and technical skills their businesses need to succeed
Degree apprenticeships are available across a range of subjects, including aerospace, architecture, engineering and nursing. They are a great way to earn while learning at some of the UK’s top universities; they offer a real alternative to a traditional degree course, combining a degree with work.
Over 100 universities now offer degree apprenticeships, including numerous Russell Group institutions.
