Today’s Education in the media looks at Thank A Teacher Day and our gratitude to teachers, the Family Drug and Alcohol Unit and work to help children in care in East Anglia.
Thank a teacher day
Today is ‘Thank A Teacher Day’ – a day to recognise the life-changing impact inspirational teachers can have on the lives of young people. As part of this, the Secretary of State has written a piece for the TES, where he has paid tribute to the dedication and work of teacher across the country.
Family Drug and Alcohol Court
Today, Friday 22 June, The Times has run a piece on the Family Drug and Alcohol Unit, and the future arrangements around its funding. This follows comments from Sir James Munby, a senior family judge, who has raised concerns over the potential for the funding to be withdrawn.
The government has provided funding to the Family Drug and Alcohol unit since 2015, to try and help them secure financial sustainability; funding from the government has been extended four times to help the unit achieve this.
While the funding for the national unit will be coming to an end in September – as was always planned, there are still a network of nine Family Drug and Alcohol Courts which will continue to operate across the country, helping families. We are working closely with The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust to manage the closure of the unit.
A Government spokesperson said:
It is important families are supported to overcome issues related to alcohol and substance misuse and the government is investing £16 billion in public health services and has set out a wide-ranging drug strategy to address this.
We have been providing funding to the Family Drug and Alcohol National Unit since 2015 to help them secure long term financial sustainability and have extended it 4 times. The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust has now decided to withdraw their application to the government’s Life Chances Fund.
A network of 9 Family Drug and Alcohol Courts will continue to operate across the country in 15 courts and 22 local authorities offering important support to families.
