Today, Tuesday 24 April, the Huffington Post published a piece on the search for a chair of the Social Mobility Commission.
The role of chair of the Social Mobility Commission is a public appointment and the recruitment process must be completed following the procedures set out in the Governance Code for Public Appointments.
The department is committed to doing this as fast as possible, while making sure that this process is followed properly. The seniority and influence of the Chair role means it is critical that we appoint the best person for the role, by following this robust process.
The government is committed to improving social mobility throughout the country, as shown by its investment in the Opportunity Areas programme, and the Social Mobility Action Plan launched last year.

This government's commitment to social mobility and ensuring every young person can fulfil their potential has never been clearer. We are spending £72million on our Opportunity Areas programme, prioritising resource in areas facing some of the greatest challenges, and in December published a comprehensive social mobility action plan which we are delivering.
The Social Mobility Commission is an important part of this ongoing work and now that we are midway through the appointment process, we look forward to recruiting and announcing the new Chair shortly.
