Holiday activities and food: what you need to know

Posted by: , Posted on: - Categories: Holidays, school holidays

If you're struggling to find childcare or keep your children fed and entertained during the school holidays, help is available.

The Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme offers free meals, fun activities, and childcare to families who need it most. But what does this mean for you and your family? Here's what you need to know.

What is the HAF programme?

The HAF programme provides free holiday clubs for children during the Easter, summer, and Christmas school holidays. Your child will get a healthy meal and take part in activities like sports, arts and crafts, cooking and more.

The government is providing more than £200 million this year to councils across England to run the programme in their local area.

Who can access the programme?

The programme is mainly for children from reception to year 11 whose families receive benefits-related free school meals. If your child already gets free school meals at school because of your family's income, they're likely to be eligible for HAF.

However, councils can also offer some places to other families who they think would benefit, even if they don't receive free school meals. This might include families facing temporary hardship. Your local council decides who else can access these additional places based on local needs. You should get in touch with your council to find out more.

Is it available near me?

Yes. The HAF programme runs in every council area in England, so wherever you live, there should be provision available for your family.

How do I find my local programme?

Your local council will have information about HAF on their website, including how to apply and what's on offer. You can search online for your council's name plus "Holiday Activities and Food" or "HAF programme" to find the right page.

When does it run?

The programme operates during the three main school holiday periods: Easter, summer, and Christmas. Your child can access up to six weeks of provision across these holidays throughout the year.

The exact dates and times will depend on your local area and when your school holidays fall, but councils are expected to offer activities during each holiday period.

How many days can my child attend?

Your child can attend for a minimum of four days during Easter and four days during Christmas holidays. For the summer holidays, they can attend for at least 12 to 16 days, depending on how long the summer break is in your area.

Each session lasts at least four hours, giving you valuable time while knowing your child is safe, fed, and having fun.

How do I apply?

The first step is to apply for free school meals if you haven't already. Your child's school can help you with this process and will confirm when your free school meals are in place.

Once this is sorted, you can then apply for HAF places through your local council. They'll have their own application process, which you can find on their website or by contacting them directly.

Can HAF settings care for my child with special educational needs?

The programme welcomes children with special educational needs and disabilities. Councils work with local organisations and schools to make sure activities are accessible and appropriate for all children who want to take part.

If your child has additional needs, speak to your local council about what support is available to help them join in.
