Today's news review looks at the Social Mobility Index, a ranking of the UK's top 50 employers for social mobility.

Today, Wednesday 21 June, the Social Mobility Commission and the Social Mobility Foundation published their Index that ranks the UK’s top best 50 employers for social mobility. Nearly 100 firms submitted entries about their practices in areas such as work with young people, recruitment, selection and progression. The rankings were decided by a panel of experts and all firms will receive a report with recommendations for areas for improvement.

We are proud that the Department for Education is included in this ranking as one of the top 50 UK employers for social mobility.

Education Secretary Justine Greening said:

No-one should be held back because of their background or where they come from. This index shows the positive steps that some firms are taking to ensure everyone can go as far as their talents will take them.

It is good news that, along with other Government departments, the Department for Education is one of the top 50 UK employers for social mobility, but Government, as a business, needs to do much more to remove barriers to opportunity. These trailblazing organisations need to become the norm, and that is the collective goal we must all have if we are truly to tackle poor social mobility. We are committed to making sure that everyone can get a world-class education which prepares them for a successful career.
