Today’s news review looks at coverage of the Social Mobility Commission’s poll of public attitudes towards social mobility.
Social Mobility Barometer
Today, Thursday 15 June, the Social Mobility Commission published its Social Mobility Barometer – a poll of public attitudes towards social mobility. In a poll of 5,000 people, the overall findings were that most people believe there is a large gap between social classes in Britain today and nearly half believe where you end up in society is determined by your parents. This has been covered widely online by BBC Online, Times, Guardian , Mail Online, Independent, TES and Metro.
The Education Secretary has previously stated that driving forward social mobility is a commitment that will be at the heart of her work. Moving forward, the Department for Education will play its part in making sure there is a level field of opportunity for all.
A Government spokesperson said:
This Government is committed to making sure that Britain is a country that works for everyone. We want to make sure everyone can get a world-class education at every stage of their life, and that everyone can go as far as their talents will take them, whatever their background.
There are 1.8 million more pupils in good or outstanding schools than in 2010, and we are delivering three million apprenticeship places, opening up access to our higher education system and investing £500 million a year into technical education. We will also be building on the progress of our £72 million Opportunity Areas programme, which is bringing together local businesses, schools and councils in 12 social mobility ‘coldspots’ to create better opportunities for young people. This will help us to create a stronger, fairer and more prosperous society for every generation as we leave the European Union.
